  1. What if you want to stream from your sound card?
I work for a radio station. There, we use orban opticodec to stream to a shoutcast server.
We input the audio to our soundcard, and it streams in real time to our server..

How do you do that with VLC?

  2. This got me started.
Hey, maybe you can help me! I want to generate playlists from the command line based on files in a directory. does vlc have any commands to assist that function?

  3. @Cameron9242008: You have a file on one computer, and you are sharing that file with another computer.
On the second computer you are trying to open the shared file from the first computer with VLC and stream it out to another computer/computers.
But, when you try to add the file to the streaming playlist in VLC, you can see the file, but when you click on it it says the file does not exist?

  4. @Cameron9242008: Sorry, the way Youtube orders comments gets confusing and I answer so many questions on youtube I lose track of things, so I'm trying to remember where we are in this process. But, I think this is where we are:

  5. I apologize for not being clear so i will try and answer your questions per denim. I connect to the server (Which is on the local Network) via the network icon in my home directory. Once the connection is made i go to the Video directory. Search for the file of my choice and click open. That works o.k., but if i right click on the file and request VLC as an option, that is when i get the error. I do not have VLC installed onto the server. Only the local machine. I hope i am being clearer.

  6. @Cameron9242008: so, I'm still a little confused. Are you just trying to play the file from a file sharing server, or are you trying to play a streaming file?

I just ask because it just sounds like you are trying to play a file. The video is on streaming audio and that may be confusing me if that's not what you are trying to do.

How are you connecting to the server?
Are you just browsing the files and opening one,
or are you entering it an address into VLC?

  7. I open VLC from my local machine. From the file menu, i select open file. I search for the file on my server and click to open. That is when i receive the error message. I agree with you, i may have the concept backwards.

  8. @Cameron9242008: I'm a little confused on your question, "Do i have install VLC on my server to stream in addition to the local box?" If don't have vlc on your "server" how would you be streaming the music at all? I mean, what are you trying to connect to?

And then you say you, "get a error message saying that i cannot stream from the local PC".

The machine that is doing the streaming is the server.

"i am listening from the server", you listen from the client end.

  9. Do i have install VLC on my server to stream in addition to the local box? When I try to stream from it i get a error message saying that i cannot stream from the local PC . I thought if i am listening from the server that VLC would stream as if it were a file on the local machine. I`m trying to do this from a FreeNas server.

  10. mux = multiplexing, where multiple signals are combined into one complicated signal and this is streamed, then the reciever demuxes that signal 😀

I dont even have linux and i follow all your tutorials 🙂
    keep them up ^^
