  1. Linux runs great on old hardware, so if you can get your hands on cheap computer, it might be worth the investment to get a second box so you don't have to mess around with your main computer. I edit my videos on a Pentium 4 Dell Optiplex that I purchased at an online police auction for 38 dollars +20 shipping. I upgraded the RAM from 1 to 2 GB, and installed Aptosid, a form of Debian.

  2. Yes, you can either go with a lightweight distro like Puppy, Slax, or Damn Small Linux, or you can go with a distribution that uses a very lightweight desktop manager, any with Fluxbox or IceVM should be fine, just stay away from distros that use Gnome, KDE, or XFCE.
