==What is your favorite lightweight Linux desktop?==
A quick review of the Ubuntu-based distribution Linux Lite 1.0.0, created and maintained by the Linux Distro Community. A very fast and capable desktop with a traditional layout, and helpful scripts, making it easy for the new user, and a solid base for the more experienced user.

  1. Dear IG, i'm new to this. my children are using Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) on my old laptop. I am no longer able to download updates or new programs for them. Would like to install Linux Lite over the present installation. I have already backed up personal files such as their school work, movies, pics etc. Is that possible to do using the required ISOfile of Linux Lite on bootable disk. in addition, we were never able to get the wifi working on the Packard Bell Easynote Skype edition gn45.

  2. If you have 3gb ram you should just install Ubuntu12.04 and it will be faster than vista and a lot of cool features. I have a 3 year old laptop with similair specs had vista home premium and ran ok but way slower than when I first got it when I installed Ubuntu 12.04 my machine works like brand new and is fast as ever it also have a lot of cool features you run a lot of programs and it doesn't slow down either. (my fist linux it was easy to install) Love it not going back to windows.

  3. hi. i have ZERO experience with Linux.
I inherited an old (5 years old?) Gateway laptop t-series, AMD Turion 64×2 Processor, 3GB Memory with crappy Windows VISTA installled on it … if i nuke the Vista and install Linux Lite, will I still be able to connect to the internet via WiFi thru the built-in wireless? .. is the hardware good to run this without lagging much?

  4. thank you for this review ,,, i agree with you thet xfce is lite and fast but not good as gnome 2 , in the other hand gnome 2 easier and more stable . i think the best environment for now days , is MATE that fork from gnome 2 ,, so please review some distro that using mate environment 🙂

    thank you

  5. i use and love peppermint, you should take a look and make a review 🙂
its a mix of lubuntu + linux mint + web apps … boots really fast and consume less than 200 mb or ram, also has automatic updates and its based on the LTS. very user friendly, stable, customisable, fast and easy to use!

  6. KDE Is one of the most complete environments. xfce and lxde are environments for old computers.

Gnome 3 is a pain to use

I personally recommend opensuse with KDE because it goes very well with the proprietary hardware.

But if you are pretty new to linux world you can try linux mint with mate or KDE.

  7. Linux lite is just a ripoff of the hard work that the Ubuntu community has done and brings back the myths of the Linux desktop OS this is a regression of the desktop OS and if I wanted a real working desktop that uses minimal ram I would go for windows XP not this failed ripoff

  8. is it non-pae because i knw the default ubuntu 12.04 download is pae, had to download a non-pae version for my "piece of ancient technology" compaq nc600 (0nly cost me $60 everything works so I think it was a good deal)
