  2. Here's some facts I pulled off the net.

    DirectX is more user-friendly.

    OpenGL has faster draw calls than DirectX. Wolfire's blog has a link to NVIDIA demonstrations that show this.

    Valve's 3D engine ran 20% faster on OpenGL.

    Minecraft uses OpenGL.

    Unreal Engine, the world's fastest (and godliest) engine runs on OpenGL.

    CryEngine made Crysis 2.

    Crysis 2 eats computer performance.

    CryEngine uses DirectX.

    Microsoft dropped OpenGL support for Vista.

    Vista sucks.

    OpenGL clearly wins.

  3. Ah… Well Steam is already being moved to Linux so support for OpenGL games are likely to be fixed on Linux.
    Personally, I've never had a problem with OpenGL on Linux unless it was with games… Even switching between Intel and ATi cards.

  4. True, but Linux is just as useful. You just said you used Linux but you would get rid of it over games? I would not get rid of an OS simply because it can't render game graphics with OpenGL very well, since it can do other things related to it just fine. Linux simply isn't a gaming platform, because it wasn't made with that in mind, OpenGL or not. That's why things like Wii, DS and PS3 can use OpenGL just fine, because they are designed explicitly to use it for games. Same with DX on Windows.

    Saying you're a Linux user and then saying something that biased is still what you call "Fanboyism". For one, it depends on your hardware and how good of support you have, and two, it depends on what application you are using and how it is utilizing DirextX or OpenGL. 99% of the time someone will be using something, it will have a bug or a crash with how it handles the graphics, they blame the OS or the API when it usually has nothing to do with it.

    The simple fact of the matter is that Linux has not been made in to a gaming platform. It can only run basic games without emulation, and emulation is terrible for gaming. Though I applaud OpenGL for being open-source, much more lightweight/less resource consumptive than DX, and being cross-platform (PS3, Wii, DS, Valve/Steam games and others) Linux is not the place to be looking for OpenGL gaming examples.

  7. @lozoft9 I totally agree with you on that,like the benchmarking is overrated also.because it does not properly read your systems ability.I have a radeon 4550 videocard which is days old and a emachines 2.7ghz 6ddr2 system and are able to play the latest games still today maybe a slight few tweaks but I am still able to play the latest games.And it's funny to me when people actually think they are playing games in 1080p when in reality it's 720p but upscaled.check out my page

  8. If it is the same machine (which I doubt), then windows 7 must gunk up d3d like nobody's business. I hate directx (it's the false prophet of PC gaming and Microsoft should be sued for monopoly), but there's no way it's that slow.

  9. @313hummer This is an unfair test because he's running on different operating systems. Sure, it's proving that linux is "viable" for gaming. But that's not necesarily what people are interested in. I for one, want to see opengl vs direct x on windows 7 exclusively, to see which runs better, and looks better… althought I think they both look pretty much the same(opengl a bit sharper… possibly a bad thing some times).

  10. OpenGL shows lower quality in flying shots, but it shows considerable performance vs. directx in the close-ups. There is also no glitching, like in directx when going down the pier. I think opengl is better. I'd rather have performance in my games rather than fancy stuff.
