I think Linux is by far the best. Simply because it runs everywhere and anywhere. Is good to carry around those netbooks with a full install on your favorite applications. Carry Linux on a live USB on your pocket is awesome too. On applications, I think it really depends what you use, Linux have much more apps to do programming, education and web apps. However the final is the Desktop environment, I use the one I want everyday while OSX will never offer an option.. zero.
im talking about the preconfigured repositories that are not necessarily community maintained ones alot of the dependency issues that happen are usually the multi universe repositories and not so much the company maintained ones
