Video is ready, Click Here to View ×

This example will show you how to remap the CAPS_LOCK key to the Escape key in Ubuntu 16.04.

Path to the file you need to edit: /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/pc

Other keys could be remapped in a similar way. Comment if you want to see how.

  1. Thank you very much! I bought a laptop in a trip the USA but I've been using the portuguese layout which does not have the back slash button. Thanks to you I was able to swap some useless key with it 🙂

  2. Thanks for this video; I actually need to permanently remap the "à" (agrave) key on my Italian keyboard, so that it maintain its original function, but when I press the combination alt gr+"à", I get "å" (aring), and when I press alt gr+shift+"à" I get "Å". I tried to use the app "Xkeycaps", but after reboot the changes are cancelled and the output file with the changes that Xkeycaps produces is empty (guess is some bug of the app); I also cannot find the "à" string in the file I opened following your tutorial. Can you please help me? and if yes please do it like you were explaining it to a baby cuz I am a total beginner with Ubuntu. Thanks!!
